Sam Day: a sam(e) day wedding painter!

What can I bring to the table that will make my wedding just that more amazing? This is a question we try to answer when working with our clients. Not only do we aim at bringing extremely cool ideas to the table, but we attempt to make it something that's personal to the couple, thus adding value to the planning/wedding. Today, I'm going to share a really personalized and unique vendor.

Want to do something totally different and be rewarded with a priceless gem at the end? Well, check out Sam Day. We are used to the same day photography or videography edits, but how about a same day painting? Sounds amazing, yes?! Sam Day , based out of Seattle, WA, is a professional painter and illustrator who does same day wedding/gala paintings. He also draws caricatures and editorial illustrations. There's nothing more artistic than having a professional painter set up a studio at your venue and capture such a spectacle. Day's paintings are Renoir-esque. I love his impressionistic approach to his canvases. Hang one of these up in your living room, and your house guests will gawk at the art work; they probably will go nuts when you tell them that the painting is a snapshot of your wedding.

JM's new adventure :: BEECH Bowtique

It's no surprise that Bellz & Whistlez has some of the most talented and amazingly creative people on the team. I always tell clients we're not just backed with folks who have a passion for wedding planning; we're actually supported by real professionals who went to school to receive their bachelors degree, additional certification, or even masters degrees to do this for a living! Cyril, Christy, and Janissa create the perfect core, and I'm so honored to work with them.

Left to right: Bellz & Whistlez {Janissa Mendoza, Christy Quiogue, Cyril Nierva, Charmae Salazar}

Cyril Nierva's daily job is to lead, organize and plan some of UCSD's (University of California San Diego) biggest events on campus, steering hundreds or thousands to participate. Reaching out to vendor resources all over Southern California, Cyril provides an interactive solution to student orientation and campus camaraderie. She puts all event planning skills to the test, sometimes having to create events within a few days or juggle multiple events at once.

Christy Quiogue, who has also delved into the world of higher education event planning, working on campuses such as UCSD, SDSU and CSU San Marcos, has shifted gears from the campus events to a more streamlined avenue in career counseling. Helping students understand the importance of "doing what you love" and adding it to the more complex question of "how to make a living out of it?," she provides inspiration that professionals will remember fifty years from now. Her job takes on a different degree of planning since going to school takes discipline and is governed by taking small steps over an extended period of time.

As a full-time Catering Manager at the posh Andaz hotel in Downtown, San Diego, Janissa Mendoza works on the other side of event planning, giving site tours of the hotel, explaining Andaz' services to potential clients, booking and securing events, and guiding couples throughout the planning. On top of that, she works for Bellz & Whistlez as an Event Coordinator, helping couples with design ideas and logistical plans for the reception. She manages to juggle her schedule around to accommodate each job, and in between, takes on the role of being a writer for the B&W blog, designs dresses for friends and family, and still creates time for her social life. When she told me a few months ago that she had another exciting adventure in her life, it didn't surprise me because she's a renegade.

And for the new adventure, Janissa is now a co-owner of one of La Jolla's very own clothing boutiques right off Girard Avenue (7874 Girard Avenue, La Jolla, CA 92037) -- BEECH Bowtique. Now, tell me Janissa, what superwoman cereal are you eating?! We congratulate Janissa on this new venture AND wish her a happy birthday! With her fashion-forward thinking, savvy style, and designer eye, this is a perfect place for her. So readers, if you want to meet someone magnificent, check out the "bowtique" on Sunday, in celebration of two of the owners' b-days and do some shopping damage! And on a side note, Bellz & Whistlez had the honor of revamping their brand. Check out B&W's new logo design for BEECH Bowtique! :)

modern cascade bouquets

When hearing the words "cascade bouquet," most people would probably envision a wedding from the 1980s. Let's face it, it was the style, possibly a tradition, thirty years ago. It's no wonder that most of the bouquets we see in any current magazine are modern, tight, small to medium in size, and composed mostly of flowers, not foliage. But I'm glad to see the cascade bouquet is making a come back, in a modern direction. Whether you're a taller bride seeking a bouquet that will balance your height, or you're wearing a simpler wedding gown that could use a complement of texture, or you just want something unique, opt for a modern cascade bouquet -- it definitely makes a statement.

Here are some of my "likes" that I spotted online. Most of these have minimal foliage fillers. You can have a florist design a small-medium cascade (also known as a teardrop), or a large (full) cascade bouquet. *Note: ask your florist about the weight of your flower selection. Cascade bouquets are larger and longer, and can test your forearm strength on the day of the wedding!

B+V's lovely wedding in the IE

Here's our first story blog of the 2011 year, and I'm excited to share Ben+Vannessa's wedding photos, taken by Stan and Jeannette Liu of Trailbrook Photography. Held at the DoubleTree in Ontario, California (Inland Empire), this wedding had one of the most packed dance floors I've ever witnessed, thanks to DJ "Uncle" Eddie Cruz, the coolest DJ in the IE. From the hint of movie-themed details, to the bright fuchsia+purple color scheme, a super rad bridal party, an AMAZING same-day-edit by Loyd Calomay Films, and one of the most hard-working and sweetest couples, B+V's wedding proved to be another successful celebration.

B+V requested day-of coordination services from Bellz & Whistlez back in 2009. It wasn't until about a year later that B&W started communicating with the couple to secure the details of the event. The final week was spent helping the couple tie loose knots, making decisions on the logistics, finishing up paper goods, and finessing the final outlines for the event. It was a challenging week, but this couple worked diligently and quickly to help wrap up all that needed to be done, including the groom having to participate in another wedding the week prior!

We are so honored to have been a part of this event. To think we (all the vendors) prepped the room in just a little under two hours, with florals being assembled on-site by FloralWorks (San Diego) and the break down of an event earlier in the day, it was a pleasure to see it all fall into place nicely with a really short setup schedule. Cyril and I left with the dance floor still overflowing with guests, but I'm certain we all left knowing it was a lovely and special October night in the IE!
