Kentucky derby themed wedding {7/3/10} by True Photography

(We've been working on a number of projects that have been keeping us super busy, so we apologize for the delay of many blog posts. We plan to get the rest of our 2010 professional wedding photos up soon, so we can continue to post new projects and 2011 weddings.)

The gorgeous wedding we are featuring today was captured by San Diego's True Photography in the middle of summer 2010. It was a hot day in San Diego and also July 4th weekend, but guests from afar definitely got to enjoy SD's beautiful view and breeze from the Randall Ballroom balcony at the Manchester Grand Hyatt. And San Diego treated them with a July 4th fireworks spectacle late at night. It was amazing!!

Joanne+Justin, a sweet couple from Maryland and Kentucky, selected San Diego as their prime location to host their grand Kentucky derby themed wedding. B&W was honored to have taken the challenge of design+coordination+invitations for this huge event. The theme was definitely one-of-a-kind, and we were all ready to research our hearts out to find out just how to creatively put it all together. J+J greeted their 350+ guests with a unique derby intro during cocktail hour; live music was played by a 3-piece blue grass band, signature mint juleps were passed around, and glasses of bourbon were provided at the open bar. Upon entering the ballroom, a jivin' 6-piece band, Good Mojo, provided the live tunes that filled the ballroom, which boasted huge floral centerpieces by FloralWorks, a gorgeous presidential table spread, red roses everywhere, and a color scheme that was fitting of the theme--deep wines, bold hunter greens, and vibrant golds. The Randall Ballroom couldn't have been a better selection to coordinate with the overall vision, and J+J were in sync with selecting matching attire for their bridal party.

Though I don't have plenty of TP's detail shots, B&W did put together many hand made details, including custom satin ring pillows, table numbers designating derby horse winners, programs, escort cards, hand made derby hats, a ballot (card) box, a custom guest book, derby hat box cake design, and even a dual bean bag toss for a social activity. We designed custom gate fold save the dates and themed letterpress invitations to give guests a snapshot of what was to come.

Besides the myriad of bellz and whistlez we incorporated into the event, this destination event's success was due to the number of hours spent securing the logistics of the wedding, such as finding accommodations, transportation, rehearsal dinner locations, having favors shipped from the east coast, and providing things-to-do for most of their out-of-town guests. Even the couple made several visits to SD to knock out multiple meetings in one Saturday to finalize details! This will go down as a uniquely themed event, and I'm so glad J+J brought the Kentucky derby flavor to San Diego.
